Overview
JOB TITLE: Banker, Private
ABOUT US
Under the name The Standard Bank of South Africa, the bank today known as Standard Bank was established in 1862 as a South African affiliate of the British foreign bank Standard Bank.
Originating in 1862, a group of businesspeople headed by eminent South African politician John Paterson [5][6] established a bank in London under the first Standard Bank of British South Africa. Beginning business in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, in 1863, the bank rapidly combined with other banks, including the Commercial Bank of Port Elizabeth, the Colesberg Bank, the British Kaffrarian Bank, and the Fauresmith Bank.
It was notable in financing and development of the Kimberley diamond fields in 1867. The title’s term “British” was omitted in 1883. Once gold was found on the Witwatersrand, the bank grew northward and began operations in a tent at Ferreira’s Camp (later known as Johannesburg) on October 11, 1886 [7], therefore becoming the first bank to open a branch on the gold fields of Witwatersrand. A second branch on Eloff Street in Johannesburg opened on November 1, 1901.
Adderley St., Cape Town Standard Bank
Although by then the British bank’s activities were dispersed over Africa, its official name was the Standard Bank of South Africa until 1962. The parent changed its name to Standard Bank Limited, and the South African subsidiary adopted the name of the parent when the activities were established as a subsidiary in 1962.
